Are you heading to Peru to hike the Inca Trail? Do you have no idea what to pack? Continue reading for my suggestions on what to pack!
Passport
You need your passport to enter the Inca Trail and you can get it stamped at Machu Picchu!
Hiking boots
Make sure they are waterproof, have ankle support, are comfortable and broken in. I got mine at REI.
Water bladder
You will need 2 liters + to stay hydrated. At altitude you need 3-4 liters of water a day to stay hydrated. Water was boiled for us twice a day for a fill up in the morning and after lunch.
Sleeping bag or sleeping bag liner
Depending on what time of year you go, it can get quite chilly at night. A sleeping bag liner can give you extra warmth and create a barrier if you are renting a sleeping bag.
Sunscreen
At high altitude you are closer to the sun and you will get burnt. Apply sunscreen thoroughly and often.
Hat
For more sun protection.
Buff
A Buff for even more sun protection.
Chapstick with sunscreen
Still more sun protection.
Sunglasses
And still more sun protection. The case with a zipper pocket that came with my Solo sunglasses worked great for loose change!
Bug Spray
There are mosquitos, even at high altitude. You will not want to forget your bug spray!
Rain jacket
To protect you from unpredictable rain showers on the trail.
Poncho
To wear over yourself and your backpack when it rains.
Spare change
It costs 1-2 Sol in order to use some toilets.
Cottonelle wipes
Most toilets will not have toilet paper, so bring your own!
Wet wipes
There are no showers until the third day. These were my best friend after a long, sweaty day on the trail! Bonus points if you get biodegradable wipes!
Hand Sanitizer
There is usually no soap in the bathrooms.
First aid kit
Anti-diahreal pills, band-aids, ibuprofen, KT blister patches, etc.
Headlamp
For getting around at night.
Poles
Very helpful for steep inclines and declines, saved my knees going downhill. Was able to rent a pair from the tour company.
Quick-dry breathable underwear & shirts
Come in handy for rain and/or hot days, my favorites are from Patagonia.
Wool socks
For hiking and cold nights.
Gloves and a wool hat
To keep warm on cold nights.
Snacks
Protein bars, trail mix, beef jerky, etc.
Electrolyte packets
These help you stay well hydrated.
Sandals
To air out your feet after a long day of hiking. Tevas work great with or without socks!
Microfiber towel
For the optional cold shower on the third night, I got mine from Matador.
Toiletries
For the optional shower on the third night. Try out these solid shampoos & conditioners from Unwrapped Life!
Playing cards
Have fun playing games with your group and guides!
Wireless battery charger
To charge your phone.
Camera
To take photos of your amazing trek.
Happy trekking!
