unBELIZEable

Belize is one of my favorite destinations I have been to. I have been to Belize three times, this is a recollection of my first time to Belize in 2015. Every client that I send to Belize absolutely loves it! Which inspired me to write this blog post, unBELIZEable.

Where to stay

During the planning process I was in-between Belize & Costa Rica, until I found Hamanasi Adventure & Dive Resort. One thing that sold me on Hamanasi Resort was their take on sustainability. You receive a stainless steel reusable water bottle upon arrival, the waste baskets in the bathrooms have two compartments (one for garbage & one for recycling), and they have an organic garden. Plus they have an onsite PADI dive shop, adventures galore and treehouses!

We got super lucky with our flights and got first class with Delta for the price of economy. Once we arrived in Belize City, we took a small plane into Dangriga. In Dangriga we were met by staff from Hamanasi and were taken to the resort in a van. We were greeted with warm smiles and an ice cold drink, shown the premises and then taken to our treehouse. Our treehouse was beautifully decorated and a lovely note was written to us from staff on a dried tropical leaf.

Mayan ruins

Our first full day we went on our first adventure to check out the mayan ruins of Xunantunich and some other smaller ruins. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and we learned a lot about mayan civilizations.

Scuba diving

The next two days we went scuba diving and we were told there was a chance for us to go dive the Great Blue Hole the second day as long as weather cooperated, and it did! We dove down to about 130 feet admiring the stalactites and hoping to see some sharks. We did not see any sharks in the Great Blue Hole, however we did see a few on our next dive at Lighthouse Reef off of Half Moon Caye. One was very curious of my camera and came to within a few feet of me!

Spelunking

Our next adventure was cave spelunking, something I have never done before. We hiked up a mountain and into a cave with flashlights and hard hats on, using ropes to climb up rocks. All the while learning about stalactites and stalagmites.

Ziplining

Another thing I had never done before was ziplining. We got to glide down the longest zipline in Belize. Ziplining was such an adrenaline rush, flying through the Belizean jungle.

Relaxing

Our last day we spent relaxing by the pool and kayaking down a river. Enjoying every last bit of food from the amazing kitchen at Hamanasi; honestly the food was incredible, every day, for every meal. Staff told us the cooks are women from Hopkins and they love to cook for the guests.

Belize is such a great destination because it still remains widely unknown to most tourists. Belize is one of the top green destinations in the Caribbean and in the world. Belize has focused a lot of its energy into conservation of its oceans and jungles. I spent my time there by the water, while one of my clients opted to stay deep in the jungle. You may also choose to spend time in both the jungle and by the ocean. Belize has it all, no matter what your interests are and is a great adventure travel destination! I usually say I would never go to the same place twice, mostly because I want to see new things, but I would definitely go back to Belize again and again. You better Belize it!
